Weddings
God is love, and those who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. 1 John 4.16
Weddings have been held in the Parish of Braidwood since its foundation in 1840s. The historic Gothic Revival church of St Andrew’s in Braidwood offers a beautiful sacred place for weddings, with generous seating. St Stephen’s in Majors Creek is an intimate space for small weddings.
We welcome wedding enquiries from couples living in the Braidwood district and from those who have historic connections with our church.
With a number of wedding venues in our locality we are also happy to receive enquiries from couples base in Canberra and beyond. However, in requesting to be married in the Parish of Braidwood couples should understand that they are not ‘hiring a venue’ but rather seeking a Christian wedding in the Anglican tradition.
We welcome people of all faiths to be married in our church, but it is a requirement of the Anglican Church that one of the couple be baptised into a Christian denomination. All weddings in our parish must be conducted by licensed Anglican clergy using the services prescribed in the Anglican Prayer Book.
As a small, rural parish the availability of clergy to conduct weddings is sometimes limited. In general ministers from other denominations are not permitted to conduct weddings in our churches, though they may participate in a service led by a licensed Anglican minister.
Marriage preparation
For a marriage to endure it needs to be placed on firm foundations. We recommend that couples undertake a marriage preparation course.
Who can be married?
While we welcome all people to our church, regardless of gender, race, religion, social standing or sexual orientation, the Anglican Church in Australia does not currently allow for the marriage of people of the same gender. The remarriage of divorced persons is allowed in the Anglican Church, but requires formal approval from our bishop.
Photography
Our priority is for the wedding ceremony to be dignified and prayerful, as well as celebratory. So while professional photographers and videographers are welcome there will be some limitations to their movement during the ceremony. They must introduce themselves to the celebrant before the service and abide by their instructions.
Fees
The base fee for a wedding in the parish is $1500. This includes the celebrant, verger, rehearsal and administrative costs. The provision of flowers and organist attract additional fees.
