Jesus said: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

Matthew 28.19

Baptism

Baptism is a significant step in the life of an adult or a child and their family, and for the community of faith as we welcome a new member of Christ’s body, the Church. Baptism is saying “yes” to God’s love and desire for us to be part of God’s family. It is the first step in a lifelong journey.

We welcome enquiries for the baptism of both adults and children.

Baptism of Children

Families seeking baptism for a child should be members of our congregation, people living within the Parish or people with an ongoing family connection with the Parish.

In baptism the parents and godparents make significant promises on behalf of the child, making a commitment to faith in Jesus Christ. Together they take on the responsibility for the Christian upbringing of the child. So while godparents do not need to be Anglican, they should be baptised and practicing Christians.

Families may like to consider a service of Thanksgiving for a Child instead of baptism. This service offers God thanks for the birth of child and asks God’s blessing on the child and family. There is an opportunity for family and friends to make a commitment to being “the village” that helps raise the child. This alternative does not prevent a child being baptised at a later time.

There is no fee for baptism, but a donation towards the ministry of the parish is always appreciated.

Enquiries

If you are interested in baptism or a service of thanksgiving for a child speak to one of our ministry team at a Sunday service, or contact the Parish Office, preferably via email. We will put you in contact with one of our ministry team to discuss your hopes and the preparation needed.

Please note that dates for baptism are subject to the availability of clergy and are normally only held on Sundays. In general, baptism is not offered during Lent (the time between Ash Wednesday and Easter).
